The name of this site was inspired by the term ‘give an inch and take a yard’ – meaning in this context we want you to be generous to yourself in the ambition you have for your outside space.
About Our Founder Larry James
Hi, I’m homeowner and property investor Larry James. I’m the main writer and editor on this site – and I manage a team of talented writers and editors to bring you the very best outdoor living content.
I’m thankful to live in a lovely family home with my wife and three children. We have a large garden and enjoy outdoor entertaining and BBQing with friends.
A keen home improvement geek, over the last two decades I’ve been involved in home reno and landscaping projects, building patios and pathways, installing garden drainage systems, and building fencing and gates.
The first backyard project I was involved in was over 20 years ago, when I spent the summer working for an ex special forces soldier building a timber frame barn by hand. I made sure I was never late for that job! 🙂

Another string to my bow is that I’m professionally certified in the use of chainsaws, so I cut and process all the wood for both our fire pit and wood-burning stove. I’ve just ‘gone green’ with my latest model – a Stihl MSA 120C electric chainsaw – and it’s one of the best I’ve ever owned!
I’m also a landlord with a portfolio of rental properties, so combined with our own house I have years of experience in creating and managing outdoor spaces. Here’s the first rental apartment I purchased:
In addition to this, I possess over 20 years’ experience in copywriting and SEO – so I thought it would be a great idea to bring together my love of outdoor living with my digital marketing knowledge to create a really valuable resource.
